Something I always get asked is "What do you eat?!" This is something that crops in in our day-to-day lives (friends and family) but also through social media.
To give a brief overview, we are a majority plant-based family. Since December last year we have been completely meat free and majority dairy free. The reason I say 'majority', is because there are occasions (for example when we eat out) where there isn't a plant-based option, so we will choose the vegetarian. We also let Frankie have some Cadburys is she asks for it at the weekend (and we sometimes indulge too). This confuses people and I often get the comments "but your not allowed that..." (rolls eyes....).
The reason we allow a small amount of dairy is because we don't want Frankie to feel the need to retaliate when she gets older, so by not completely denying it, we are hoping that one day when she's old enough she will choose to eliminate dairy from her diet through her own choosing.
Why are we plant-based??
Whilst living in America, it became very clear quite quickly that foods contained a lot more ingredients than they did in the UK. One example of this is Mcdonalds fries, in the UK they contain just 4 ingredients, but in America they contain 14!!!
We also became accustomed to seeing signs that read "No antibiotics or hormones in our meat".
And don't get me started on the food colouring and baby formula (many baby formulas contain High Fructose corn syrup- something that PREVENTS the baby from feeling full... A possible cause for obesity?!)
These discoveries scared us, it wasn't what we were used too and over time we read and researched ALOT.
We decided that we were going to try a plant-based diet for 6 weeks.
It was much easier than we anticipated, I enjoyed cooking dishes from fresh and having as few ingredients as possible.
So that is a brief overview of why we became plant based, so what do we eat? Here are some examples of what we eat at meal times.
Breakfast- Porridge with dates, blueberries and almond milk
- Smoothie including spinach, frozen berries, banana and cashew nuts.
- Wholemeal toast with poached egg, avocado and chill flakes.
- Big bowl of fruit.
- Weetabix with almond milk
Lunch- Pitta, hummus, veg sticks and avocado dip
- Fruit salad with peanut/almond butter
- Tomato, chickpea, hummus and avocado sandwich
- Homemade soup
- Quinoa, cous cous and bean salad.
Dinner- Aubergine and chickpea curry
-Hassleback sweet potatoes with salad and cous cous
- Lentil dahl
- lentil based bolognese (Deliciously Ella recipe)
- Vegetable chilli burritos
- Vegetable curry with wholemeal rice/bulgerwheat
- Turkish Mezze platter.
Snacks- Fruit, 'nice-cream' (frozen berry fake ice-cream), nuts, dried fruit (we love prunes and apricots), dark chocolate, seeds, smoothies.
So as you can see, we don't starve!
I love being plant-based and eating a healthy diet, it has definelty made me feel more spiritual and conscious about the world we live in. Obviously something that comes hand in hand with this is the discovery of animal cruelty. I won't go into detail about all of that but it is now one of the reasons we won't be returning to eating meat.
